The year 2009 earmarks the momentous 200th Anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. In addition, it delineates the 100th Anniversary of the extremely popular Lincoln cent coins.
To celebrate these two historic moments, the U.S. Mint introduced 2009 Lincoln cents with four new and distinct reverse designs. The first of the four designs was the 2009 Lincoln Cent Childhood and Birthplace design, also referred to as the Log Cabin.
The first coin in the series was released on February 12, which also happens to be Abraham Lincoln’s birthdate. To celebrate the launch of the first new 2009 Lincoln cent design, the Mint held a special ceremony in Hodgenville, Kentucky where it exchanged the new coins with those in attendance.
The U.S. Mint produced all four designs of the 2009 circulation strike Lincoln cents both at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. Proof 2009 Lincoln cents with the four different designs were also produced. They can be distinguished by the S mint mark, since they were produced at the San Francisco Mint.
On February 12, the U.S. Mint also released a special 2009 Mint State and Proof Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar to honor Abraham Lincoln.
