The District of Columbia Quarter was the first design released in the District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarter Program.

Obverse: The obverse of the coin depicts the same Washington motif used on 1999 Quarters to date.

Reverse: The reverse of the coins depicts Duke Ellington the renowned jazz musician holding some notes in his right hand, while sitting in front of a piano. The piano has his name Duke Ellington inscribed on it. Towards the top of the design are the words, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. Towards the bottom of the design are the words, JUSTICE FOR ALL and E PLURIBUS UNUM along with the date 2009 or the date in which the coins were issued.

Mint Issue Price: The Proof District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters were sold in a Proof set consisting of all six different 2009 Proof Clad Quarters. The sets were first offered on the U.S. Mint web site on January 05, 2009 at Noon (E.T.). Each Clad Proof Set was priced at $14.95 each.

The Mint also offered Silver District of Cloumbia and U.S. Territories Quarters in a seperate set.
