The Sarah Polk Spouse coins were first offered to to the public on September 03, 2009. The coins were being sold at $641. each directly from the U.S. Mint. Sarah Polk was the wife of former U.S. President James K. Polk.Sarah Polk’s portrait is on the obverse of the coin. Below her portrait are the words 11th and the years 1845-1849, which represent the years in which James Polk served as the 11th President of the United States of America. On her right is the motto In God We Trust, to her left is the word Liberty along with the date of 2009, or the year in which the coins were issued. Below the date is the W mint mark indicating that the coins were struck at the West Point Mint.
The reverse side of the coin displays Sarah Polk working next to her husband James Polk, while sitting in a room with a window visible in the background. Sarah is remembered as being very supportive of her husband. In fact, she was James Polk's personal secretary during his presidency. Above the image is a circular border with the words United States of America arched above the design. Arched below the design are the words E Pluribus Unum, $10 1/2 oz .999 Fine Gold indicating the coins legal face value, weight and purity of the coin.
The coins were composed of 24 Karat pure gold. The maximum authorized minting limit was set at 40,000 coins across both uncirculated and proof versions combined.
