The 2009-W 1 Ounce Proof Platinum Eagle is the only Platinum coin struck in the year 2009.

The 2009-W $100 Proof Platinum coins went on sale on December 03, 2009. The new design theme is "To Form a More Perfect Union," which is also inscribed on the coins reverse design. This theme will continue throughout 2014 with changing designs each year.

The Mint issue price was set at $1,792. for each coin. The spot price of one ounce of platinum for that day was at about $1490. The coins were scheduled to begin shipping on December 17, 2009.

This is a new design consisting of four female faces from different nationalities. All the depicted women represent the diversity of our nation. The women's clothing and hair weaving are also joined together and are symbolic of forming a more perfect union.

On October of 2009 the Mint announced that they would cease producing all 2009 Uncirculated Platinum eagles and most Proof Platinum eagles. This included all the $5, $10, $25 and $100 Uncirculated Platinum coins. For the Proof Platinum coins, they also canceled the fractional size Platinum coins with a denomination of $5, $10 and $25. The Mint canceled all of the aforementioned Platinum coin products, primarily because they were unable to obtain the required Platinum plachets to strike the coins.

After canceling most of its 2009 Platinum products, the Mint had already anticipated a large demand for the 2009 1 Ounce Proof Platinum coins. As a result, customers were only allowed to order five 2009 1 Ounce Proof Platinum eagles per household. Despite the imposed ordering limit, it wasn’t enough to prevent a sell out within about a week’s time period.
