In conjunction with the circulating Presidential Dollar Coin Program, the Mint also struck coins honoring the Presidents Spouses. Therefore, to honor former President Franklin Pierce, 14th President of the United States, the U.S. Mint struck the Jane Pierce Spouse Gold coins.

The Jane Pierce Spouse Gold Mint State coins were issued by the U.S. Mint on June 03, 2010 at 12:00 Noon (ET).

Jane Pierce was the daughter of Jesse Appleton, President of Bowdoin College. After her father’s death at age 13, she was raised by her wealthy maternal grandparents. Years later, she met Franklin Pierce who was still a young lawyer at the time and they got married in 1834.

Franklin Pierce was also a member of the House of Representatives and became a U.S. Senator in 1837. Because of Franklin Pierces service and qualifications, in 1852 the Democratic Party nominated Pierce as the candidate for a Presidential term of the United States of America.

Interestingly, Franklin Pierce’s Spouse, Jane Pierce, was against Franklin Pierce’s decision for running for U.S. President.

The Jane Pierce Spouse Mint State coins were originally priced at $766 each in the first week of sales. On the following week of the release date, the coins price would fluctuate depending on the spot price of gold for that week.
