On October 27, 2011, at 12:00 p.m (E.T.) the U.S. Mint offered the highly anticipated 25th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set. This set contained five different 2011 Silver Eagle coin versions.
One of the coins in the set was the Uncirculated Silver Eagle with no mint mark but according to a Mint Spokesperson, this coin was struck at the San Francisco Mint. Therefore, the 2011 Uncirculated Silver Eagle from the 25th Anniversary Set will have an (S) mint mark in parenthesis on the PCGS holder indicating that the coins do not have a mint mark but were struck at San Francisco.
The 25th Anniversary Set contained the following five coins –
- Uncirculated Silver Eagle with "W" mintmark
- Proof Silver Eagle with a "W" mintmark
- Reverse Proof Silver Eagle with "P" mint mark
- *Uncirculated or Bullion Silver Eagle with no mintmark
- Uncirculated Silver Eagle with "S" mint mark
The U.S. Mint offered this special five-piece set to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Silver Eagle Program. This is similar to what they did in 1995 when they struck a special 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle in order to celebrate the Silver Eagle Program's 10th Anniversary. They also did this in 2006, when they introduced the "W" mintmark Uncirculated Silver Eagle, including the Reverse Proof for the first time ever.
The Mint only produced 100,000 sets, which is considered a small mintage for the Silver Eagle series. This year's 25th Anniversary Set was extremely popular and sold out within several hours on the first day of sales.
