The 2013 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coin Program

The 2013 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coin Program recognizes five of the greatest leaders of our time, United States Army 5-Star Generals George Marshall, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight Eisenhower, Henry “Hap” Arnold and Omar Bradley. These men are the only World War II 5-Star Generals and each is an alumnus of the United States Army Command and General Staff College. This commemorative coin program also celebrates the 132nd anniversary of the founding of the College.

A surcharge of $35 for each $5 gold coin, $10 for each silver dollar and $5 for each clad half-dollar sold is authorized to be paid to the Command and General Staff College Foundation to help finance its support of the College.

General Douglas MacArthur

General Douglas MacArthur graduated from West Point in 1903. He went on to serve 52 years in the United States Army as a distinguished soldier and strategist, eventually earning the position of Chief of the Army General Staff. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his defense of the Philippines. Later, forces under his command defeated those of the Empire of Japan, after which General MacArthur directed the highly successful reconstruction of the Japanese nation. General MacArthur served as the first commander of the United Nations Forces during the Korean War. During his career, General MacArthur taught in the Department of Engineering in the United States Army Command and General Staff College.

The obverse features a portrait of General Douglas MacArthur with the 5-star insignia on the right side of the design. Inscriptions are IN GOD WE TRUST, DOUGLAS MACARTHUR, 2013 and LIBERTY.

The reverse features the Leavenworth Lamp, the symbol of the CGSC. Inscriptions are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, FIVE DOLLARS and FORT LEAVENWORTH.

Pricing for the 2013 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coin Program Proof $5 Gold Coin is in accordance with the United States Mint pricing schedule for gold and platinum coins. These products are priced according to the range in which they appear in the Pricing of Numismatic and Commemorative Gold and Platinum Products Grid. Pricing for the 2013 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coin Program Proof $5 Gold Coin could vary weekly dependent upon the London Fix weekly average gold price. Due to the possibility of pricing fluctuations, no mail orders will be accepted.  On May 22, 2013, the sale price was $449.05.

On-Sale Date

To ensure that all members of the public have fair and equal access to United States Mint products, any order placed prior to the official on-sale date and time of March 21, 2013, at 12 noon (ET) shall not be deemed accepted by the United States Mint and will not be honored. This product will be available during 2013 only.
