2016 France €10 Verdun the Sacred Way PR70DCAM { PCGS-5 }. During the devastation of WWI women on the home front supported men in the trenches through a pen-pal campaign that helped keep spirits high. The ranks of these letter-writers swelled with women of all ages: from young girls to grandmothers. The term "Les Marraines de Guerre" was first used in WWI attributed to those volunteers providing succour to soldiers, often in the form of letters and gifts. Translated roughly as "War Godmother" their ranks engulfed France. Here a young women writes a letter of encouragement to a veteran of Verdun. This flawless gem has shimmering surfaces and is one of those coins that one knows at a glance that the gem will grade perfect; as did its two siblings that I submitted to PCGS.
