South African Gold 2 Rand, Circulation Strikes (1961-1983)

The South African 2 Rand was the predecessor of the 1/4 ounce Krugerrand. In fact, the two denominations share a common reverse design (Springbok) and they actually overlapped each other from 1980-1983. The 2 Rand is considered a bullion coin but is less well-known than the Krugerrand. The 2 Rand contains slightly less than 1/4 ounce of pure gold, which gave it a disadvantage when it came time to calculate it's intrinsic value. The largest mintage of any coin in this set is 21,000, but all are considered common.
