The 1989 Gold £5 piece features an iconic Tudor Rose design to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the first gold sovereign coin issued in 1489. The reverse is a Shield of the Royal Arms ensigned by an open Royal Crown, the whole superimposed upon a double rose and the circumscription ANNIVERSARY OF THE GOLD SOVEREIGN 1489-1989. The obverse shows H M Queen Elizabeth II seated as at her Coronation, within the circumscription ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REG FID DEF, which may be translated as Elizabeth II - by grace of god, Queen, defender of the faith. Both obverse and reverse are designed by Bernard Sindali, and are considered the most beautiful modern adaptions of the original sovereign design of 1489. Very tough to get a 70 grade.
From the Royal Mint: For the 2012 Sovereign coin, The Royal Mint launched a competition to find a new design. The Royal Mint Advisory Committee eventually selected a design by the British sculptor Paul Day. “I have chosen to opt for a romantic version of the St George and the dragon theme,” said Paul, “a medieval knight of Arthurian legend rather than a classical hero. I have given the dragon a more threatening attitude and size, so that it represents a real menace and not a weak foe.” Paul deliberately left very little empty space, making the reverse as engaging as possible and very different from the obverse. As he says, “I have always been attracted to detail which requires a closer look to be unpicked and fully understood.”
Mintage of 3500. In 2002 The Queen celebrated her Golden Jubilee. To mark the event The Royal Mint unveiled a new reverse of The Sovereign, featuring the shield of the Royal Arms. Designed by Timothy Noad, the image was similar to the shield reverse that was struck in 1838 during Queen Victoria’s reign.
Low mintage of only 750, comes only from 5-coin Proof Premium Sets. A return to the iconic 1817 Garter design by Pistrucci.
