From the Hansen Collection. In my opinion the only thing that keeps this beauty this from a higher grade, and CAC approval, is a hunk of organic matter under the I in UNITED (it literally has a hair in it--and it should have been removed prior to slabbing).

CAC approved. Fortin-107a on slab. R-3. From the Louis Eliasberg, Sr. collection. PCGS 9(1)/4. NGC 5/2/3/1. CAC 8/3. Light to medium pearl-gray iridescence dances across both sides of this sharp, vibrant, satin-textured GEM. GEM dimes of this early date are scarce and finer examples are rarely encountered. Pedigree: From S.H. and H. Chapman's Harlan P. Smith Collection sale, May 1906; J.M. Clapp; Clapp estate, 1942; Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection, May 1996, lot 1121. The Fortin plate coin for the variety. Was NGC (343176-006) CAC (by me); I crossed it into a PCGS Slab on 4/11/17.

CAC approved. Fortin Variety 107; R-3. Type Two Obverse (two lines above E). Original silver-gray surfaces, satiny white, and clean. A great lustrous Uber GEM with fantastic overall eye appeal (and some light die clashing). Miss Liberty and the details are frosty and well struck. None graded finer by CAC.

Based on Breen's description (page 334) I believe that this die pair was used to make the 12 "proofs" for this date. "These dies were later used (retaining initial polish) on business strikes, still later cracking" (as seen on the obverse).

CAC Certified. OC-6 Low; R.3. The date is re-punched, and a fine line connects the D in GOD to the eagle’s head. This beautiful and lustrous near GEM is on the cusp of a conditional rarity (only 5 coins have been certified by CAC that are numerically higher (4 in MS65 1 in MS66). The sweat drop on the bottom edge of the reverse keeps it from an uber GEM grade.
