One Dollar Gold, Proof (1849-1858)

This is a set of ultra-rarities! It comprises three different types, with the 1858 (Type Three) being the only date that is seen with any frequency (18 examples certified). The Type One Proofs (1849-54) are so rare that PCGS has not certified a single piece of any date as this is being written. The Type Two Proofs are dated 1854 and 1855 and are great rarities as well, with just eight specimens certified for the two dates combined. The Type Three Proofs begin in 1856 and this set includes the first three years of issue. Not only is this a great set, nabbing even a single coin in the series is a numismatic accomplishment.
