The $3 gold piece was first issued in 1854, and the series lasted until 1889. While several dates in circulation strike were hoarded to a limited extent, most $3 gold issues are rare in any mint state grade, let alone in MS65 or better. It is a series filled with tiny mintages. In 1883, for instance, only 900 business strikes were made. The mintage for 1881 is 500. In 1885 there were 801 pieces struck. For 1873 the mintage is believed to be 100 coins. The key dates in circulation strikes include the 1854-D, the only Dahlonega Mint $3 gold piece, the 1854-O, the only New Orleans $3 gold piece, and the 1855-S. The 1870-S three dollar gold piece is unique. It resides in the Harry Bass estate. In the event that the coin is sold and graded by PCGS, this set will finally be completable. The proofs offer an even greater challenge. There’s the possibly unique 1855-S that is graded and authenticated by PCGS. There’s the extremely rare 1854, 1855, 1856, 1857 1858...the highest population of any of these coins is four, and that includes all proof grades! The $3 gold series in proof is rarely collected, due to the price. But what a set it is! Even the most common coin in the series (did we say “common?”) has a population of only 48 coins in Proof 65 or better.

Notes: This set has bonuses. Please see the Set Composition for a listing.
