The Eagle, or $10 Gold piece, while not an easy set by any means, is considerably more achievable than the Quarter and Half Eagle set by virtue of the fact that mintage was suspended between 1805 and 1837. Of course, the famous 1875 (100 minted – the lowest mintage of any U.S. coin made for circulation) looms large, and with fewer than 10 survivors, is a six-figure coin in any grade. Nearly all the 18th century dates will prove quite costly, as will the 1870-CC and 1883-O. And lest you think things get easier in the 20th century, bear in mind that the series ended with the 1933, most all of which ended up in the melting pot. Calling this set "achievable" is really relative to the Half Eagle set. On it's own, it provides plenty of challenges. There are not a lot of major varieties of Eagles. In fact, the set requirements only increase by 10 coins over the Basic Set. As one might expect, most of the tougher varieties are in the 18th century, and the 1795 9 Leaves and the 1798/7 7X6 Stars both approach six figures in higher circulated grades.
