O.113a Small Stars. The finest known of the late die state. About 6 or 7 mint state coins known.
O.114 R3. Newman. CAC. "Large Stars Guide Book Variety. Tied for Finest Known O-114. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. This coin is a stunning Gem, with brilliant silver centers surrounded by vivid rings of golden-brown and lavender toning. The remarkably well-preserved surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster throughout with few, if any, signs of handling or album storage. The strike is razor-sharp. An extensive network of die cracks is evident on the reverse and interesting clash marks are visible on both sides. Overall eye appeal is terrific. NGC has graded one other MS65, the Prouty Ex: Norweb and Pryor coin last offered in Superior's Hudson River Valley 3 sale, October 2000, lot 3273 where it brought a modest $24,150. That coin remains in the strong hands of the successful bidder. A PCGS MS65 1807 Large Stars was the super nova of our half dollar offerings in the Central States signature sale of April 2010. With a "look" comparable to the Newman coin it took $149,500 to bring it home! We will not be surprised to see a repeat of that bidding war when this piece comes to the floor. The Mint began the year with a small mintage of Draped Bust dollars, before switching to the new design. A modest mintage of 750,500 Capped Bust half dollars was accomplished in the later part of the year, the second smallest business-strike total for the series. Only four different die varieties are known for the date and type, including the Large Stars O-114 variety represented by the present coin. The O-114 variety is easily recognized by the small die lumps below the 7 in the date and overlapping lower arrowheads on the reverse. O.101a R5. The only redbook variety besides the 1817/4 not available in mint state with two PCGS AU55 coins leading the condition census. Tied with three others at AU50 for third finest known. This is the late die state with a shattered obverse die with extensive die cracks. No less than four major obverse die cracks are seen. Per Heritage cataloger," Deeply Toned AU 1812/1 O-101 Half Dollar, Large 8 Variety. A very scarce and always-desirable variety among early Bust halves. This piece appears to be tied for second finest known with two other coins. This piece shows only the slightest trace of friction over the highpoints of the design. Eliasberg/Clapp.Per StacksBowrers cataloger, " An intensely lustrous Gem with a bold array of golden toning ranging from bold champagne and a touch of fiery sunset orange on the obverse to a broader array of deep orange, crimson, and electric blue on the reverse. Struck about as boldly as you are apt to see for the date, and the frosty surfaces are visually immaculate, especially to the unassisted eye. The Coin Facts plate coin. The only MS-65 example of the variety certified by PCGS, with none graded finer by that firm. The known pedigree of this beautiful Gem half dollar stretches back more than a century, and evidently this particular coin has been lovingly cared for during that long time. O.115 R2. Eliasberg. Lovely original tan and pewter surfaces with shimmering cartwheel luster. Described by the Eliasberg cataloger as," Sharp and well centered. Lustrous grayish brown with faint splashes of gold toning, particularly on the reverse. Choice surfaces overall. Another splendid coin. Die notes: Perfect obverse. The color is a tad bolder on the reverse, although both sides are equally endowed with a bold strike and satiny luster. Free of detracting abrasions, with an impressive pedigree to boot.
