CAC approved. Rare U.S. gold coin expert Douglas Winter described this example: Variety 1-A. The 1849-D is numismatically significant as the first gold dollar made at the new Dahlonega mint. It is by far the most available gold dollar struck at this facility and it is plentiful in circulated grades although only 10% of the coins graded EF and AU are “CAC quality.” This lustrous piece has the body and appearance of an AU50 to AU53. It is well made and original with some luster and pleasing natural green-gold color. A bit of planchet roughness at the inner left obverse is mint-made and does not detract from the excellent overall eye appeal.
