After deciding to put together a PCGS Registry Set of silver Jefferson "War Nickels" I began searching Ebay for MS-66-FS (or better) nickels to add. This one was my favorite 1942-P out of all available (in my price range) on Ebay so I watched the auction until nearly the end and submitted a bid of $150.00 just seconds from the end of the auction. I won the coin for $133.50 - substantially lower than the PCGS current price listing of $200.00. It was a great coin to begin my collection with :-)

Although the PCGS price guide lists a value of $100.00 for this coin as I write this (June 3rd, 2014) the value seems to be higher for choice examples. Auction results appear to show that $110 to $120 is more realistic. It could be that a price guide adjustment will follow soon? I located this coin on Ebay and felt that it was the nicest example available. There was 1 other that interested me but the pictures weren't clear enough for me to determine if it was a better coin. After messaging back and forth with the owner via eBay messaging, he mailed me the coin on approval. Upon evaluating them both my decision was easy. I purchased the 1943-P with certification number 21484567 that is now in this set.

While shopping for and locating the 1945-P nickel for this set on Ebay I noticed that the same seller had this beautiful 1943-S. I then shopped other 1943-S's and never found one that I liked as well as this one in the same grade. The strike on this coin is very sharp and both the obverse and reverse fields have rich, satiny mint luster. There are VERY few distracting marks and the steps on this reverse are outstanding! Price wasn't much of a concern for me as I decided that while putting this set together I would pay whatever was necessary (but reasonable) to obtain the quality of coins I was seeking. The bonus on this on was a price that was $45.00 below the Coinfacts value of $115.00 at the time I purchased it. Yep, I bought this one for $69.99 and FREE shipping. Love this one ;-)

Purchasing this one was an exercise in patience. I was browsing silver nickels for this set on Ebay and ran across this splendid 1945-P. At first I thought the price was a "Buy It Now" at $304.99 and I got pretty excited because the Coinfacts value had it listed at $475.00. I then realized it was a starting bid and the coin had 4 days to go until the end of the auction. I had just purchased some other numismatic items and was NOT in a position to bid on it even 4 days down the road. I was sure it would sell and I would miss the opportunity to own it. I watched that auction like a hawk and it ended 4 days later without a bid...YAY! I contacted the seller and asked if they'd please relist it or offer it to me on a "Buy It Now" auction at the starting bid? The next day I got a reply that it was indeed relisted....on another 5 DAY auction ending on a Saturday morning with a starting bid of $304.99 again!(I'm not a very patient individual...) During that 5 day 'waiting period' I sold a couple of items so I could justify spending the money on this nickel. I told myself "It'd be a bargain if I could get it at that price and she's a real beauty!" Also during that 5 day wait I realized the same seller had a beautiful 1943-S at a starting bid of $69.99 (lists at $115.00) in an auction ending 15 minutes after the 1945-P auction. Hmmmm...TWO bargains?!? When 11:45 a.m. Saturday finally arrived I was sitting at my computer ready to bid when the clock ticked down to about 15 seconds left....I won BOTH coins in the next 15 minutes and they are together in this set now.
