1804 Mint Set with Gold

1804 is one of the very few years with no Half Dollar. There is also no Half Dime this year, so four pieces will complete the set. That's a bit easier said than done, as the Cent, Dime and Quarter are all significantly better dates this year. In fact the Cent was so scarce that restrikes were made around 1860 to satisfy collector demand. The Quarter, by virtue of it's minuscule mintage of only 6,738 pieces is somewhat available in lower grade, but above VF, becomes both scarce and expensive. The Dime is also a very low mintage piece (8,265 pcs) and like the Quarter, escalates in value very quickly in grades above VF. Only the Half Cent this year is anywhere near "common." Not the easiest set to complete, but one that would surely impress the experienced numismatist. And if these Copper and Silver issues were not enough of a challenge, the gold issues certainly can provide that. In particular, the Eagle, struck for the last time until 1838 will put a dent in the wallet. While specimens are out there (an estimated 90 or so have survived) they are in high demand and a mid five-figure outlay will be required even for a VF-XF example. The Quarter and Half Eagles are of ordinary rarity for the type, and while early gold is never cheap, they should not require an inordinate effort to locate.
