1809 Mint Set with Gold

The 1809 Mint Set witnessed the continuing adoption of John Reich's Capped Bust design (which had appeared two years earlier on the Half Dollar and a year earlier on the Cent) to the Half Cent and the Dime. Due to the intermittent mintage of several denominations in the early years, it would be some years before that design would appear on the Half Dime (1829) and Quarter (1815). Both the Cent and the Dime for 1809 are slightly better dates. They are by no means rare, but do bring a premium over the most common dates for their respective types. The Half Eagle is the only gold coin minted by the U.S. in 1809 and like all early gold coins, is scarce. For the type, the 1809 is not difficult, but a nice circulated example will run into the upper four figures, and a Mint State piece will run in the low to mid five figures.
