1831 Mint Set with Gold

The Mint Set for 1831 contains a controversial coin. While 2,200 1831 Half Cents were struck, it is believed by some to be a Proof-only issue. It's a tough call, as the mintage seems far too low for a conventional business strike for circulation, but far too high for a Proof issue. Several restrikes were made using later reverse dies. The original is included in this set, and about 20 or so pieces are known. The Quarter reappeared after a 3 year hiatus, though now in a reduced size and with a modified design. The remaining coins in the Copper and Silver set are all quite common, and should present little to no difficulty. The gold of course, is a different story. Struck under the older weight standard, virtually all U.S. gold coins struck in the 1820s and early 1830s ended up with bullion dealers, and were exported and melted leaving only a handful of survivors. Even circulated examples run into five figures and better mint state pieces run to six.
