Sam Houston was elected the first President of the Republic of Texas on September fifth. The Second Bank of the United States lost its charter and went bankrupt in 1841. Thus ended the era of national banks until the banking act of 1863-1913. None of these banks were totally responsible for creating and adjusting the nation's entire money supply, that was left to the Federal Reserve System created in 1913.
