1865 Mint Set with Gold

As the Civil War concluded, efforts got underway to retire the Fractional Currency notes and other stopgap measures taken due to the shortage of circulating coins during the war. A three-cent coin struck in a nickel alloy was introduced in 1865 to help alleviate the shortages and retire the three cent notes. Few Half Dimes and Dimes were struck in Philadelphia and even if they had been, they would have been quickly hoarded. Due to the War, few smaller gold coins were struck, with the Philadelphia Quarter and Half Eagles quite scarce due to very low mintage. As usual, Mint State examples are quite rare, although quantities of both Philadelphia and San Francisco Double Eagles exist today due to recovery from shipwrecks.
