1866 Mint Set with Gold

The last of our current denominations made it's appearance in 1866. The nickel five cent coin was introduced shortly after the end of the Civil War to help retire the fractional currency notes which had circulated widely during the War. The Philadelphia Half Dime and Dime are both scarce, low mintage issues. The motto "In God We Trust" was added to the reverse of the larger silver coins (Quarter, Half and Dollar) though a few "No Motto" Halves were made in San Francisco. Including the gold makes this a relatively large (28-coin) set since "No Motto" Half Eagles, Eagles and Double Eagles were struck in San Francisco in addition to the "With Motto" varieties struck in both Philadelphia and San Francisco. It goes without saying that all the larger gold coins are rare in high grade, with only a handful of Mint State pieces extant.
