The 1875 Mint Set (without Gold) is a completable set in that it contains no major rarities. The Trade Dollars and the "CC" issues will be the scarcest, but unless you're looking for MS-65s or higher, you should be able to finish this one at a reasonable cost. Adding gold puts a whole different face on this set. The Half Eagle and Eagle from Philadelphia constitute two of the great rarities in U.S. Numismatics. In fact, the 1875 $10 is the lowest mintage of any regular issue U.S. gold coin. A mere 100 pieces were struck for commercial usage and just 20 proofs. The Half Eagle isn't much better, with only 200 pieces struck, with again, 20 proofs. It goes without saying these are both six figure coins in nearly any grade, and the problem isn't so much the price, as the opportunity to buy one. They appear less than once a year at auction on average. Even the 1875-P Quarter Eagle and Gold dollar are incredibly scarce, with only 400 of each minted. And the challenge doesn't even end here. The "CC" Half Eagle and Eagle are anything but easy, with almost no Mint State examples known. The Double Eagle can be found in Mint State, albeit at a low to mid five-figure price. Good luck with this set... you'll need it.
