1880 Mint Set with Gold

It is the humble Shield Nickel that achieves top weighting this year, as only 16,000 were struck. While for a gold coin, that's no great shakes, it's most unusual for a nickel. The minor silver is likewise all low mintage, as most of the silver this year was again used for Morgan Dollars. Speaking of which, the 1880-O, which starts off in low grade as a common date, quickly jumps in value in higher MS grades (MS-65 and up). The rarities in the Gold issues are where you'd expect; the "CC" Half Eagle and Eagle, the "O" mint Eagle and the Double Eagles in higher grade will all provide more than enough challenge.
