1889 Mint Set with Gold

The 1889 Mint Set includes one of the major rarities in the Morgan Dollar Series; the 1889-CC. Like many of the "CC" coins, mintage was low, and most went into circulation. The nicest (MS68) is a threshold million dollar coin and even the lone MS65 is worth an easy quarter million. The Half and Quarter were made only in Philadelphia, and this was during the "low mintage" period when Morgan dollar production was consuming the bulk of the nation's silver bullion. The three cent Nickel piece made its farewell appearance this year, having only been coined in small quantities since 1881. The gold coins for 1889, while including no major rarities, are generally premium dates. The 1889 Eagle boasts a minuscule mintage of 4,400 pieces and is unknown above MS62. The 1889-CC Double Eagle is a better date. Not on the order certainly of some of the great rarities of the series such as the 1881-87 Philadelphia coins, the O mints of 1854, 1856 or 1879, or the CC issues of 1870 and 1871, but scarce in Mint State nonetheless. This was also the final year for two gold denominations; the tiny $1 gold piece, and the $3 Gold piece which since 1878, had seen minimal quantities made.
