In 1652, John Hull began the first-ever coinage in the English Colonies. The first coins were simple disks of silver stamped with "NE" (for New England) and a Roman numeral punch indicating the denomination. From 1653 to 1660, Hull produced a series of "Willow Tree" coins, with crude tree-like designs. His artistry improved with the issuance of “Oak Tree” coins from 1660 to 1667, eventually culminating in the "Pine Tree" coins of 1667 to 1682. Despite the long period of time during which these coins were produced, all (except for the undated NE coins) bore the date 1652 or 1662! This design set includes one of each type for a total of four coins. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Guess again.
