The nine-piece Proof Set for 1865 introduced the Nickel Three Cent piece and this first year of issue coin is one of the rarest of the series. In the top grade of PR-67, it is quite rare. The other three base metal coins are of average rarity for their issue. The silver coins, with a mintage of 500 pieces, are also typical with the Dollar being the key to the set. The gold coins, with their mintage of only 25 pieces, are (not surprisingly) all quite rare. With only about a third of the larger denominations and just over half of the smaller denominations surviving, completing this set will take plenty of time and money.
