1885 Proof Set with Trade Dollar

The 1885 Proof Set, like the 1886, contains several coins that are far less expensive in Proof than in Mint State. The Three Cent Nickel, with a mintage of only 1000 business strikes, is far scarcer than the Proof with almost 3,800 pieces made. The 1885 "V" Nickel is a key date, and Mint State pieces are far tougher than Proofs. Like most dates in the 1880s, production of Quarters and Halves was negligible, due to the enormous production of Silver Dollars, so the Proofs often represent the easiest path to ownership. The Trade Dollar made its final appearance this year, if you can call five pieces an appearance. The Trade Dollar had been struck only in Proof since 1879, and the final two years, only a literal handful were produced. With an admission price of a couple million dollars, this is not a coin many will be adding.
