The 1885 Proof Set, like the 1886, contains several coins that are far less expensive in Proof than in Mint State. The Three Cent Nickel, with a mintage of only 1000 business strikes, is far scarcer than the Proof with almost 3,800 pieces made. The 1885 "V" Nickel is a key date, and Mint State pieces are far tougher than Proofs. Like most dates in the 1880s, production of Quarters and Halves was negligible, due to the enormous production of Silver Dollars, so the Proofs often represent the easiest path to ownership.
