The 1968 Proof marked the return of Proof Sets after a three year hiatus. Big changes came though, as they now bore the "S" mintmark (the first regular Proof Coins to be minted in San Francisco) and they came packaged in a hard plastic holder. The coins were also the first of the clad coins to appear in a Proof set. This landmark set truly marked the start of the modern era in U.S. Mint products. The first in a series of famous "No S" Proof coins also occurred this year, when a Dime was struck without the mintmark. While not the rarest, it is an extremely tough coin, with an average of only about 1.5 appearances at auction per year. Nice examples currently trade in the $25K-$30K range.
