1918-S 5C Allen-4.08b, FS-901 Mule MS63 PCGS #90198

Ex: The Mahal Collection In 1907 the rising price of silver necessitated a reduction in the fineness, size and weight of U.S. Philippine silver coinage. The size of the Twenty Centavo was reduced from 23 mm to 20Ex: The Mahal Collection mm , which was only .5 mm smaller than the then circulating five centavo coin. Since all U.S. Philippine coins used the same basic reverse design mix-ups were bound to happen. In 1918 a Twenty Centavo reverse die was accidently mated with a regular Five Centavo obverse die. Although the exact number of this Muled coin that was produced before the error was discovered is unknown few specimens survive today in any grade and mint state examples are very rare. PCGS has graded only 44 examples in any grade and only 11 of these were Mint state. This Choice Mint State example of the 1918-S Five Centavos Mule is sharply defined and has brilliant luster and excellent eye appeal. This specimen is pedigreed from the Mahal Collection (also known as the "Just Having Fun Collection"). PCGS Population 4 in MS63, 3 finer (8/6/2020)
