关于此套币: New Orleans in the early 19th century was one of America's most populous and fastest growing cities. By 1840, 102,000 lived in the city at the mouth of the Mississippi. It was the nation's fourth largest city, the largest city in the South, and the largest city away from the Eastern Seaboard. The establishment of the branch mint at New Orleans in 1838 was a testament to the city's importance as a commercial center. However, the thriving economy of antebellum New Orleans and the relatively limited mintages of both gold and silver coins (compared to the other two branch mints at Charlotte and Dahlonega which only produced gold coins) meant that most New Orleans coins were needed for commerce. The average survivor is well-circulated and few were set aside with some issues have no mint state survivors at all.
