1999-S Delaware (DE) Washington Quarter PR69DCAM - ABA : { PCGS-3 } (Oct'2006) This well executed design uses the deep mirrors well to offset the frosted image of Caesar Rodney on horseback. Caesar was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and the President of Delaware during most of the Revolutionary War. A nice example for other states to follow as Delaware, the first state to ratify the Constitution, inaugurates this series.

1999-S Pennsylvania (PA) PR69DCAM - CCC : The first of too many mediocre designs that feel the need to incorporate the state outline. Additionally, this coin features the Commonwealth statue and a keystone. It looks thrown together, it's cluttered and the cameo contrast is lost on the miniscule statue.

1999-S New Jersey (NJ) PR69DCAM - AAA : A memorable event in US history, captured nicely in cameo crossing the still deep waters of these exceptional mirrors. Rendered brilliantly, this coin features Washington crossing the Delaware on Christmas 1776 prior to a surprise attack on the Hessians in Trenton.

1999-S Georgia (GA) PR69DCAM - CBC : Another state outline, the Georgia Peach and a live oak sprig; three symbols thrown together to make a coin design. Just the peach, large and prominent, would have been better.

1999-S Connecticut (CT) PR69DCAM - AAA : A nice visually pleasing coin that uses the cameo contrast well to bring to life the Charter Oak. This tree served as the reputed hiding place of the charter granted by King Charles II to the Connecticut Colony when a newly appointed governor Sir Edmund Andros sought to claim the document and invalidate its concessions.

2000-S Massachusetts (MA) PR69DCAM - BBB : The Minuteman statue, and appropriate symbol of the Revolutionary War is somewhat diminished by the cameo state in the background (which at least is not a mere state-outline stick drawing).

2000-S Maryland (MD) PR69DCAM - CAB : Somehow this coin just misses the mark. It is a simple clean design that effectively uses the area with cameo devices and deep mirrors to show the Maryland State House. This structure features the largest wooden dome in the US that is built without nails. The white oak clusters represent the state tree. The reverse design layout just looks like something a kid might do.

2000-S South Carolina (SC) PR69DCAM - CCC : Gee, another state where all we could come up with is a state outline, state tree (Palmetto), state bird (Carolina wren) and state flower (Yellow Jessamine). Who would think making a collage of them on a quarter would be a good idea?

2000-S New Hampshire (NH) PR69DCAM - BAA : The Old Man of the Mountain, or Great Stone Face, was captured in this design before it collapsed in 2003. The profile has been New Hampshire's state emblem since 1945. It was put on the state's license plate, state highway-route signs and now its state quarter. Some tout it as the only US coin with a profile on both sides.

2000-S Virginia (VA) PR69DCAM - AAA : Nicely reminiscent of the seafaring traditions of the early colonies, this coin features the sailing vessels Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery. They are artistically rendered in cameo against perfect mirrors.

2001-S New York (NY) PR69DCAM - BBB : Though not universally recognizable, the cameo state in the context of the Statue of Liberty does work as an adequate design. Eleven stars adorn the perimeter.

2001-S North Carolina(NC) PR69DCAM - AAA : Very well done historic moment captured nicely in frosted cameo and brought to life with the deftly reflective mirrors.

2001-S Rhode Island (RI) PR69DCAM - ABA : There is a nice use of frosted devices to present a vintage sailboat underway in Narragansett Bay, against the back drop of Pell Bridge.

2001-S Vermont (VT) PR69DCAM - BBA : This design features maple trees and sap buckets on Camel Hump Mountain, a somewhat awkward design for this medium, though rendered well. The reflective mirrors make the trees stand out.

2001-S Kentucky (KY) PR69DCAM - AAA : This well executed design for the land of quarter horses features a thoroughbred behind a fence at Federal Hill Mansion. The perspective works well on the medium and use the cameo effects to greatly enhance the image.

2002-S Tennessee (TN) PR69DCAM - AAA : Classic, appropriate, well rendered, a fitting tribute to Tennessee and Nashville and the musical heritage of country. This piece has excellent cameo contrast and device definition.

2002-S Ohio (OH) PR69DCAM - BBC : The Wright Flyer One and Neil Armstrong's space suit (he is one of Ohio's native sons) super-imposed over, of all things, another state outline. There is not much more here other than images thrown together to make a coin design, that leave you asking: "Why?"

2002-S Louisiana (LA) PR69DCAM - BBB : A US outline plus a cameo depiction of the Louisiana Purchase; and a pelican in the foreground for good measure. The pelican by itself, could have been good; or a Battle of New Orleans theme; or New Orleans itself. This is a waste of the strong cameo effects and deep mirrors.

2002-S Indiana (IN) PR69DCAM - BBB : This could have been a great coin design, with the Indy race car and the halo of nineteen stars (for the 19th state); but its effect was compromised by the state outline.

2002-S Mississippi (MS) PR69DCAM - ABA : If the best you can do to commemorate the state by depicting a state bird, fish, flower, tree, etc.; then this is an example of how to do it. Nice close-up detail of two Magnolia blossoms effectively using the limited space with strong cameo contrasting the highly frosted flowers with the highly polished fields.

2003-S Illinois (IL) PR69DCAM - ABB : An interesting use of the state outline to frame a young Abraham Lincoln with today's Chicago skyline in the background. And there are 21 stars for the 21st state to boot about the perimeter. This coin has strong cameo effects to make the figure of Lincoln stand out.

2003-S Alabama (AL) PR69DCAM - AAB : This state's design features Helen Keller, with her name printed AND in Braille; along with a longleaf pine branch and Magnolia blossoms. This is the proof version of coin released for general circulation.

2003-S Maine (ME) PR69DCAM - AAA : Nice crisp classic design with powerful sweeping mirrors and well executed cameo devices of the Permaquid Lighthouse and a schooner. This coin serves as a great example of how less can be more in implementing powerfully effective low relief images on small silver coins.

2003-S Missouri (MO) PR69DCAM - BAA : Cameo frosting enhances the devices, including the Gateway Arch and Lewis and Clark returning down the Missouri (though I must admit I assumed the three were Tom, Huck and Becky).

2003-S Arkansas (AR) PR69DCAM - ABB : Another collage; this time of rice stalks, a diamond and a mallard duck rising above the lake (at least it avoided the faux pas of including a state outline). The cameo contrasting effectively brings to life the images; but it is a bit busy. Just the duck rising from the lake could have been powerfully done.

2004-S Michigan (MI) PR69DCAM - CBC : As if state outlines weren't bad enough, now we're resorting to lake outlines! So you either love this design, or you hate it! Presented with a highly frosted state and deeply mirrored lake interiors, this makes an image only recognizable with the "Great Lakes State" slogan. It seems, so much more could have been done with this state.

2004-S Florida (FL) PR69DCAM - BAA : From the Spanish Galleon to the Space Shuttle, Florida with its Sabal palm trees captures 3 images in highly frosted contrast to expansive and deeply mirrored fields. A nice clean and simple design.

2004-S Texas (TX) PR69DCAM - AAA : Yes, it is a frosted state image with the Lone Star; but it's done with style. The rope coyly borders the perimeter in a non-intrusive way leaving plenty of deep mirrors to offset the cameo state, which works, perhaps because Texas is instantly recognizable. This state image works because it and the super-imposed Lone Star are all there is; and that's enough.

2004-S Iowa (IA) PR69DCAM - BBA : A school house with a teacher and students planting a tree, from a painting by native son Grant Wood, is perhaps better rendered on canvas than silver. The cameo frosting and mirrored fields are wasted on this piece. Grant Wood is most famous for his "American Gothic".

2004-S Wisconsin (WI) PR69DCAM - AAB : With a bust of a cow, a round of cheese and an ear of corn, this coin captures the state produce in a well rendered piece. There is no mix-up with low or high leaves on this proof corn-husk. The cameo-contrast works well on the devices with ample fields to show-off the deep mirrors.

2005-S California (CA) PR69DCAM - AAA : Nice cameo effects show John Muir gazing admiringly on the Yosemite Valley and Half Dome. An unimposing Giant Sequoia and California Condor are silhouetted against vast deeply mirrored fields. This coin captures a sweeping vista yet manages an uncluttered look with ample highly polished fields. Well done, California!

2005-S Minnesota (MN) PR69DCAM - AAB : With a common loon in the forground on the lake, fishing occurs behind it and in the background a tree studded bank. The state is used as a frosted placquard to note "Land of 10,000 Lakes".

2005-S Oregon (OR) PR69DCAM - AAA : A panoramic view of Crater Lake is effectively captured from a tree-lined ridge. The deeply mirrored fields serve to mimic the crystal smooth waters of the lake, reflecting the mirrored sky over the crater.

2005-S Kansas (KS) PR69DCAM - BAB : An American bison rendered substantially from the front, aside several sunflowers. Except for the classic buffalo nickel design, the bison has proven problematic on a number of recent commemorative dollars. This smaller coin manages to leave mirrored surfaces covering half of the reverse, but the shaggy bison coat obscures the head and the long grass obscures the legs leaving a frosted blob that doesn't stand out all that well.

2005-S West Virginia (WV) PR69DCAM - ABA : The New River Gorge Bridge is featured with stark cameo contrast to the mirrored skies. The design is well rendered, but I'm wondering if there might not be a better subject.

2007-S Montana(MT) PR69DCAM - AAA : This simple design provides ample fields and impressive mirrors, that in themselves invoke the vision of "Big Sky Country," featuring a bison skull in the center with mountains and the Missouri River in the background.

2007-S Washington(WA) PR69DCAM - AAA : Another appropriate well rendered design, detailing a salmon leaping in front of Mount Rainier with the caption "The Evergreen State". Clearly, after eight years, the designers have got the knack of creating state quarters.

2007-S Idaho(ID) PR69DCAM - ABA : A slight deduction for the state outline, but at least the state has a recognizable shape. The coin features a side view of a peregrine falcon.
