- Joseph Lesher was a Colorado pioneer and owner of a silver mine. He struck these tokens, which each contained a full ounce of silver, with a face value of $1.25, which could be redeemed at various merchants in the area. Bumstead, who was a Grocer in Lesher's hometown of Victor, CO was his largest customer, and thus many Lesher dollars are from this issuer. Running afoul of federal authorities, soon after he began striking these "souvenirs", the Secret Service put an end to the issue. This is a gorgeous, high end example. A moderate luster glows from below a rich patina. Antique dove and slate hues with splashes of dappled black tones. The sharply struck devices stand out boldly. The eye appeal is pleasing and totally original. The present piece is Serial Number 165. The Type 1 Lesher type is identified by the scroll work on the reverse flanking the fasces. PCGS 6, NGC 3, CAC 4. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $6,000 and this piece has sold twice previously: realizing $3,840 in March 2019 and $5,179 in January 2016. The CAC CPG value is $5,500. We sold a PCGS MS64 CAC for $9,106. These are quite rare so fine and this CHOICE example should bring a strong bid. Cert. Number 30663250 PCGS # 19001
