- GERMANY. Munster & Osnabruck. Peace of Westphalia Silver Medal, 1648. PCGS AU-50 Gold Shield.
Pax in Nummis-124; D&O-131. By E. Ketteler. Obverse: Palm frond and laurel branch crossed in saltire above veduta of Münster; Reverse: Three doves (representing Sweden, France, and the Holy Roman Empire) each presenting olive branch to crown and scepter resting atop a cushion. Quite attractively toned, with only light, even wear and overall problem free surfaces. Compare to a similar example--also a PCGS AU-50--which realized a total of $420 in January 2019.
Ending the destructive Thirty Years' War, the Peace of Westphalia was a collective name for the two treaties signed in the German cities of Münster & Osnabrück and saw--among other outcomes--a cessation in the religious conflicts between Catholics and Protestants.
Estimate: $200 - $400.
