This is a VERY HIGH END, VERY CHOICE, 1796 dime. A glorious representative of this first year of issue that is rarely seen so fine or so beautiful! The dime was authorized in the April 12, 1792 Mint Act, and while silver coinage began in 1794, it focused on half dollars and dollars. In the early days of the mint, depositors would deliver silver to the mint for assaying and refining, then the silver would be used to produce coins. Little demand was seen for dimes and quarters, both denominations did not begin to see any demand until 1796 (Spanish colonial one and two reales pieces served in commerce for the smaller silver denominations). The 1796 dime is a two-year only type, and as the first year of issue, the 1796 is an American numismatic "blue chip" a coin that is in demand from collectors in all grades. This is a totally original and fully CHOICE JR-1. Easily identified by the die break at Star 1, this is a late die state with bold clashes on the obverse and cracks on the reverse. Superior surfaces offer NO imperfections. If you use a strong glass all you will find are Mint made items like die cracks and some light clashing. We do NOT believe this coin has ever been messed with (we can't even find any old light cleaning lines). A moderate luster beams from all over. Both sides have a totally original even warm gold/champagne color with blue/deep violet rims (mostly on the reverse). Ms. Liberty and the details are amazingly struck. The reverse even has 98% full breast feathers. The eye appeal is tremendous! PCGS 15, NGC 21, CAC 4. This is the ONLY MS63+ graded at PCGS. This coin is a dear friend, most recently selling in our October 2020 Regency Auction bringing $49,938. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $58,000. It should be noted that the CAC CPG value in MS64 is $85,800. This coin will be the pride of any collection. VERY RARE finer, to get a better-looking piece, you're going to have to buy a 65 or better for six figures! If you love Bust Dimes, check this coin out! Cert. Number 25518809 PCGS # 4461
