- 1652 Massachusetts Bay Colony Oak Tree Shilling. Noe-12, W-510. Rarity-6. IN at Bottom. VG-10 (PCGS). CAC. 71.91 grains. This is the same die marriage used to coin the Noe-10 and Noe-11 Oak Tree shillings, here in a later state with a diagnostic obverse cud break (as made) in the rightmost branches of the tree. The tree on the present example is very weak, yet discernible, a feature shared by the second Hain family specimen (Stack's, January 2002, lot 41). More boldly defined elsewhere, the strike is rather nicely centered with all devices fully on the planchet. Dominant pearl-gray patina with warmer charcoal-gray highlights intermingled at the borders. A few old, faint pinscratches in the central reverse field are noted, as is light roughness in the planchet (as made) near the left obverse border and a minor planchet crack (also as struck) at the letter M in MASATHVSETS. This is a very scarce die marriage that was missing from Richard Picker's collection, both MHS sales and the 1991 ANS exhibition.
