- 1830 Capped Bust Half Dollar. O-119. Rarity-1. Medium 0. MS-64+ (PCGS). CAC.
Overton calls this the "Medium 0" variety, but PCGS only acknowledges the Small 0 and Large 0 varieties of the 1830 half dollar, and designates this piece on the holder as a Small 0. A wonderfully original near-Gem, the obverse exhibits iridescent copper-rose peripheral toning while the reverse is more boldly patinated in copper-gray. Both sides are smooth and satiny with a sharp strike by the standards of the die marriage (the horizontal stripes in the shield are always blunt). The Autumn 2018 revision to Stephen J. Herrman's Auction & Mail Bid Prices Realized for Bust Half Dollars: 1794-1839 does not include this coin in the Condition Census for the 1830 O-119 dies, although other MS-64s are included therein. Among the finest known for this otherwise readily obtainable die pairing, as such, this coin is sure to catch the eye of both advanced type collectors and Bust half dollar variety enthusiasts.
Provenance: From Heritage's Baltimore, MD Signature U.S. Coin Auction, March 2009, lot 1994; Heritage's Los Angeles, CA U.S. Coin Auction, August 2009, lot 1598.
