- 1856 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. AU-58 (NGC). CAC. This inviting near-Mint example exhibits a lovely blend of golden-orange and pale pink colors to surfaces that retain plenty of original mint luster. As a Philadelphia Mint issue near the beginning of the series, the 1856 is often regarded as a more readily obtainable three-dollar gold piece in today's market. In reality, this issue is quite scarce and underrated, especially relative to the 1854 and 1855, and especially the 1874 or 1878. A find for the astute gold specialist. PCGS# 7974. NGC ID: 25M8.
