- 1856 Round 25 Cents. BG-228. Rarity-7. Liberty Head. MS-63 DPL (NGC).
One of the most significant offerings in our sale of the Oregon Collection, this is a simply beautiful California small denomination gold coin. Vivid medium gold surfaces are fully struck throughout the design with highly reflective fields. BG-228 is a Period I issue attributed to maker Antoine Louis Nouizillet. It is a notable rarity, the variety readily distinguished from the more common BG-229 and BG-230 by bold repunching to the letter R in DOLLAR. The earliest auction appearance for the variety now known as BG-228 appears to be Bangs, Merwin & Co.'s January 1863 sale of the Benjamin Haines Collection. Precious few others have been confirmed since; Bob Leonard provides a census of only 11 examples in the 2003 edition of the standard Breen-Gillio reference California Pioneer Fractional Gold, although with the important qualifier, "Probably includes duplication." With several of the coins in the Leonard census circulated or impaired, and this being the only DMPL or DPL coin certified by PCGS and NGC, here is a very important offering of this Mint State rarity. Outstanding!
