- A Very Rare Mint State Double Ducat from Isenburg
GERMANY. Isenburg. 2 Ducat, 1811. Carl of Isenburg-Birstein (1803-15). NGC MS-62.
Fr-1357. 6.96 grams. By J. Laroque. Obverse: Bare head left; Reverse: Wide arms on mantle divides date, "DUCAT" appears below. Struck by dies intended for a single Ducat, this multiple Ducat displays marvelous prooflike flash in the fields and stunning clarity through the high relief bust of Carl and the intricate reverse shield. Close inspection reveals a thin layer of lacquer on both sides that is of no harm to the surfaces and would be removable by conservation. Undoubtedly one of very few struck in this weight, with even fewer survivors available to collectors. A legitimately important relic of the period as such.
Prince Carl was one of Napoleon's few real German allies and suffered accordingly, his enlarged Duchy being assigned to Hesse-Darmstadt by the Congress of Vienna. He is also remembered as the innocent patron of famed counterfeiter of ancient coins, Karl Wilhelm Becker.
Estimate: $12,000 - $15,000.
