- 1876 Twenty-Cent Piece. BF-2. Rarity-2. Doubled Die Reverse. MS-62 (PCGS).
Blushes of olive-blue patina are more extensive on the reverse, both sides sporting a soft base of pewter-gray. Lustrous and smooth for the grade with a well executed strike. Introduced in 1875, by 1876 the unpopularity of this denomination in circulation was already confirmed. Only a perfunctory quantity of coins was struck at Philadelphia in the latter year, none at San Francisco, and almost the entire Carson City mintage of 10,000 pieces was melted. Today, the circulation strike 1876 Philadelphia Mint twenty-cent piece is popular among specialists in the more unusual denominations, as well as with better date type set collectors seeking to avoid the common 1875-S.
