1872 Pattern Commercial Dollar. Judd-1217, Pollock-1358. Rarity-8. Proof-64 RB (PCGS). The obverse features James Barton Longacre's "Indian Princess" design with Liberty seated to the viewer's left. Liberty is wearing a feathered headdress, her right hand supports a liberty pole and her left hand rests atop a globe inscribed LIBERTY. Two flags are behind the portrait, one of which displays 13 stars. Thirteen additional stars encircle the periphery, and the date 1872 is below. The reverse exhibits an olive wreath around the inscriptions COMMERCIAL DOLLAR, 420 GRS and 900 FINE with two crossed cornucopias separating the words COMMERCIAL and DOLLAR. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is above and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is on a scroll at the base of the wreath. Struck in copper with a plain edge.<br />      This is an exceedingly rare pattern type with a mere three pieces believed extant:<br /> <br />                     1. Ex: Pre-Long Beach Auction (Ira & Larry Goldberg, 5/2007), lot 1433. This coin has been certified by NGC as Proof-65 BN Cameo.<br />                     2. Ex: King Farouk of Egypt; The Palace Collection (Sotheby's, 1954), lot 1899; Vickery; 1972 ANA Sale (Paramount, 8/1972), lot 978; The Dr. Walter Lee Crouch Collection (Superior, 6/1977), lot 527. This piece has not been certified as is described as "cleaned" on the website uspatterns.com.<br />                     3. <strong><em>The present example</em></strong>, prior pedigree unconfirmed, although this coin <em>could be </em>the specimen that the website uspatterns.com states has been held in a Wyoming Collection since 1972.<br /> <br /> A beautiful coin with near-full mint bloom to both sides, the outward appearance is largely one of reddish-orange color. A bit of light olive-brown iridescence is also noted, as one should perhaps expect given the RB color designation from PCGS, and it is a tad bolder on the reverse.
