1869 Liberty Half Eagle. AU-58 (PCGS). One of the very finest seen by PCGS and with a certified population of just <em>two</em> at this grade level, unexcelled at that service. Mintage of 1,760 pieces, of which perhaps 100 survive, essentially all in lower grades from circulation (NGC notes two in mint state grades in their <em>Census</em>). Slightly prooflike fields as always seen, with die polishing within the ribbon on the reverse, scattered handling marks and nicks too. Coppery-gold with a bit of haze in the toning department. Identifiable by a moderate cut in the field between stars eleven and twelve. A formidable rarity in this grade.
