- One of the most popular silver dollar issues, a type that appeals to silver dollar collectors, as well as patterns. After not striking silver dollars for circulation since 1804 (from dies dated 1803 or earlier), newly installed engraver, Christian Gobrecht set to work designing a new silver dollar. His portrayal of Liberty seated on a rock holding a shield and liberty cap on a pole on a plain field. The reverse shows an eagle, flying through a starry field, and on this die alignment, it flies "upward and onward." While considered a pattern issue by some (listed as Judd-60 in the pattern reference. Mint records indicate 1,000 1836 dollars were struck, all in Proof format, but were intended to circulate, and many did. This is a "GEM" AU example of this very popular type. Deep, rich, antique slate, pewter, dove, and russet-silver toning has a somewhat dappled, pattern. Tinges of classic azure and soft gold mingles over the lightly worn devices and fields. A hint of reflective luster flashes under the toning. The devices are razor sharp and show the slightest trace of cabinet friction on the high points. The eye appeal is truly spectacular for this always popular and historic type. PCGS 30, NGC 22, CAC 6. This is the most recent example to sell, realizing $19,000 three years ago. Today the PCGS Price Guide value is $23,000 and the CAC CPG value is $28,100. This is a great type coin for the collector. Quite scarce any finer, this is the perfect grade for most collectors. Cert.
