- 1821 Capped Bust Half Dollar. O-107. Rarity-2. MS-62 (PCGS).
This lovely piece hails from the famous Norweb Collection, where it was offered as lot 3075, attributed as a Proof, and described as follows:
A beautiful coin, with golden brown surfaces accented with tinges of sea green, magenta, and gold. The Proof surface is complete on both obverse and reverse, including within the shield stripes of the eagle.
Walter Breen, in his Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins, knew of just one Proof example of O-107, the Elder-Ryder-Raymond coin.
Here is an exceedingly important opportunity for the connoisseur, for not only is the 1821 half dollar exceedingly rare as a Proof example of this early date, but in addition the die variety is Rarity-5 in any grade.
Much has changed since this coin's offering in our (Bowers and Merena's) Norweb III sale of November 1988. For one, the 1821 Overton-107 attribution is now rated as Rarity-2. More significantly, PCGS has determined that this coin is a circulation strike, which opinion was rendered ahead of its offering in our (American Numismatic Rarities') January 2005 Kennywood Collection sale. This coin still invites in-person inspection, offering as it does a very nice strike, nice eye appeal derived from vivid iridescent toning, noticeably reflective fields, and a high quality pedigree. Although previously offered as a Proof, Stack's Bowers Galleries is offering this coin as currently certified in its PCGS MS-62 holder, with the Norweb pedigree on the insert.
Provenance: From the Legacy Collection. Earlier ex Maurice Storck, April 10, 1954, to the following; our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the Norweb Collection, Part III, November 1988, lot 3075; our (American Numismatic Rarities') Kennywood Collection sale, January 2005, lot 511.
