- 16 graded MS-62, 24 higher at NGC. A nice, late die-state of FS-101, the primal designation for one of the all-time overdates across all series. Vast popularity of the Buffalo nickel set itself places intense demand on the famed overdate, but this is no ordinary example. NGC suggests only a couple dozen "better" examples in their holders, which is indicative of an undeniably rare coin above the very select grade level. The variety was not even discovered until 1931, meaning most examples had already taken on a decade's worth of circulation.
A relatively dense layer of yellowish patina tends to subdue underlying mint luster, but even without a loupe, one can easily appreciate and observe extensive flowline texture within the fields. The coin may have a surrendered a point to the fully choice grade level on account of this factor alone. Nevertheless, some of the toning toward the periphery takes on album hues, incorporating orange, magenta-green and purplish accents. The cataloger personally remembers only one other coin taken off of such late dies, with the obverse showing radial die cracks off the lower end of the feather, attached to the Indian's nose, a subtle erosion crack crossing both of the lower ribbons, and of course, the diagnostic crack along the lower jaw. Two tiny cracks on the bison's head join the rim as well.
