- Rarely Offered Mint State 1861-S Quarter Eagle
1861-S Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. MS-60 (NGC).
Here is a certified Mint State example of a scarce and conditionally challenging early San Francisco Mint gold issue. Bathed in pleasing golden-apricot patina, both sides also display subtle olive highlights. The strike is noticeably soft over the eagle's legs and talons on the reverse, a bit less so above Liberty's brow on the obverse, but it sharpens considerably toward the borders. Produced in modest numbers -- 24,000 pieces -- the 1861-S suffered a higher rate of attrition through circulation than many of its contemporaries from the San Francisco Mint. Circulated survivors are elusive with most heavily worn, if not also impaired. As such, problem-free About Uncirculated survivors are significant condition rarities. Mint State examples are seldom encountered, and with no contemporary numismatic interest in this issue, they represent coins that survived purely as a matter of chance. Definitely a significant bidding opportunity for today's advanced gold collectors.
NGC Census: 3; 5 finer (MS-62 finest). The corresponding PCGS Population is 1/3 (MS-63 finest).
