This is truly a borderline-GEM 1867 nickel worthy of any special set of this first nickel series. The nickel-silver luster is frosty and has a wonderful look. Sharply struck on both the obverse and reverse. Numerous die cracks show how challenging striking coins in this composition was, and why part way through 1867 the reverse rays were removed from the design. PCGS 160, NGC 193, CAC 23. This is the ONLY MS64+ graded at PCGS and there is no record of it selling in auction. A PCGS/CAC MS64 sold for $1,020 in October 2018 and a PCGS MS65 CAC sold in the 2017 FUN auction for $2,820. In 64+, the Collector's Universe value is listed at $1,350, but since this coin is so close to 65 quality and eye appeal, it should sell for more.
